Kiran Ahluwalia was born of Punjabi parents in northern India, but raised in Canada. Although she was surrounded by a community that made sure she was familiar with her heritage, it was a personal decision to go to India that brought her to herself as a singer. She now specializes in Ghazal (classical love songs) and the folk music of the Punjab. “Meri Gori Gori” belongs to the latter category and is from a number of songs dealing with a maiden’s constant search for the man who will give her some kind of jewelry that she has her heart set on—in this case, a gold bangle.
